The
Lake Burullus Protected Area is a Ramsar site and its
management and infrastructure are currently being developed
by the support of GEF-MedWet- Egyptian Environmental
Affairs Agency. The lake is a large fresh-to-brackish
lagoon; extensive reed swamps of Typha and Phragmites
on the southern shore are among the last vestiges of
wilderness in the Nile Delta.
The people of the area are mainly from the Nile Valley
while some are descended from the Bedouins originally
inhabiting the deserts and oasis of Egypt. Their distinctive
traditions are largely concerned with the sea and include
ship repair and fishing.
Rice is cultivated as well as fruits and vegetables;
animal husbandry is practised. As in other Mediterranean
coastal areas wild birds are extensively trapped .
Tourism development and modern innovations are encroaching
on the way of life followed in all the Mediterranean
coastal wetlands (images and text below highlight: wearing
apparel, sources of livelihood, fishing, buildings of
various sorts and boats and boatbuilding).
